Title: JOY and Safety riding boats waves
Post by: Horst Sergio on August 28, 2021, 06:20:59 pm
I have a new love  :D

She weights 300 metric tons, has a cruising speed of up to 25 km/h and floats around in one of our lakes, which just rarely create enough wind waves.

When I met her some time ago with a race kite, I was able to play a bit with her waves at distance but pumping around even being unhooked and the wind and the race kite ... hasn't been too much interesting, as you can imagine.

But last days we met again also not much more than 15 knts of wind, so no relevant wind waves but her lee wave was good enough to stay on it for long, with the 5 m² wing on the handle behind and a just 1000 cm² foil under the feet.

While her back is about 10 m wide I took care to keep at least the same distance and being a bit on the side so the captain could see me, as I myself wouldn't feel well having somebody following you in the blind spot. I know from lakes around with rules for kiter to not go closer than I think around 100 m, for obvious reasons.

So I am interested to hear who else shares the joy of big (commercial) boats waves (not of private wakeboats) and what do you think and experienced about safety reasons and keeping the peace with the professional captains.
