Foil not required...
« on: August 12, 2020, 06:08:29 pm »
I apologize in advance for not having photos or video.  My friend, Eddie, and his buddy Harry, in their 50s, are regular dawn patrollers at a dumpy, local shorebreak that tends to get wind on it by 10 am.  Eddie and Harry are really quite good SUP surfers, but Eddie is mesmerized by this 'Wing' and 'Foil' thing.  I sold him a 4M WASP.  He had never kited or windsurfed, only paddle sports. Eddie said it would probably be best to not be seen in public initially - I am assuming he did not want to be embarrassed in front of the parking lot critics that often do not surf all that well themselves.

He tells me he played around in the backyard a few times before heading off to their spot.  His board is an older, 9-0 Riveria NUGG.  As he tells it; 'He pumps up on the beach ..and with a side-on wind of about (he's guessing) 15kts he side-crawls out thru the lineup and makes it outside without that big ego deflation you get when your very first start of something new is a fail.  Outside he is drifting downwind waiting for a set wave - spots one - and powerslides into the wave and rides it all the way in.  The rest of the morning sounded much like; 'rinse and repeat'.  (' not likely as good as that first wave..)

The part where the big smile came while telling was about the parking lot when they were done.  I gather there were a number of people who came over and said; 'What is that?!'  At this point, I am not sure he needs to mess with the foil.  There are lots of ways to enjoy the water.

Jim

Their names are not real, just the people.

Wetstuff, that is great and kinda where my wife is. She uses a SUP to wing with.

There is a cool product that we use called a Drift Stopper that allows you to go upwind with.

He might want to look into that to help him get and stay upwind.

Thats interesting wetstuff. May be you can post a video or pictures in the future.

Imho this ist the better solution to upgrade your Sup for going upwind:

I started myself with a SUP (without waves) and Wing, I found it was a bit boring after a while. But with waves you can use the Wing like a lift to take you out. Some years back I was trying to learn surfing, and the thing I remember most is all this paddling out through the waves. Already exhausted you try your best on the next wave and then you have to go back out again.

I also followed some people on YouTube who review SUP boards, they ended up downwind on the lake, but they had fun trying something new.

This is what I built myself
It kept me upwind but did add some drag and the strap begins to vibrate

That Slingshot product looks great.

Its cheaper than the driftstoper and probably provides a more realistic experience.

The benefit of the drift stopper is that you can switch boards with it. And I would imagine it is more durable than the SUP Winder.

Anyway, great that we have these two options available.

My friend (we do not have the same schedule) told me he will finally add a fin. "A big hatchet fin", he said.  The way he describes it, he buries the rail to take advantage of the rather full outline of this surf SUP.  My personal experience is I found a 27" wide 12-6 gun shape worked much better than a 31" wide, 10' nose rider.

AND, I was lead to believe an old sailboard with a centerboard would rocket upwind. I bought BIC cheap and parked it. It was very heavy and had (to my eye) too much nose kick so the 12' OA was quite a bit shorter.  I also used it with booties -a mistake for me- due to nerve issues; I need direct contact with my feet to feel what is happening.

One day - I will get some pics.  He's done about his fourth session and now has foil-fever.

Another solution would be to use a ready base of keel base for inflatable board and glue it to the base of the board with 3m double-sided tape, I believe it would not release, as the foil mount is also glued with double-sided tape.
